Inspired by Huaiyuan’s work The Lazy One Goes Out ( 懶鬼出門 ), which captured the myriad aspects of life observed during travels in an incisive, reportage-like manner—offering sharp and lucid judgments, delineating the personalities of encountered individuals through various labels, swiftly jotting down notes on scraps of paper, and refining them into piece after piece of prose—the creative approach of drawing from sensory experiences and directly transforming them into highly subjective expressions resonates deeply with me. This work recreates a process of creative transformation that I strongly identify with: where an object, drawn to someone’s attention through a sensory punctum, is transmuted into words, which in turn give rise to new narratives.

The work presents a scene encountered during travels—reminiscent of a hotel room, yet also resembling a floating compartment adrift at sea. The Golden Gate Bridge remains a constant presence, while an azure sky connects this fictional yet familiar space. Within it, people carry distinct characteristics, traces of their existence, both proximate and distant, vying for the writer’s gaze. Yet, as everything falls under the scrutiny of a human observer, the observed figures seem stripped of their outer layers, their emotions and rhythms laid bare. In an instant, their shifting expressions are captured as strings of text, gathered and reassembled, ultimately forming a uniquely reimagined landscape.

啓發自淮遠的著作《懶鬼出門》,淮遠以有如新聞報道式、一針見血的紀錄了旅行中看到的人生百態,明朗爽快的判斷,刻劃出週遭碰上的人的性格並冠上不同稱呼;飛快的紀錄在紙條,沉澱後完成一篇又一篇文章,這種從感觀汲取並以極其主觀式的直接轉化成物的創作方式最為觸動我。這作品重現了我所共鳴的——物象由感觀的刺點吸引某人以致物象被某人轉化成詞語後又再生成另一編章的創作轉換過程。

作品呈現一幀旅遊遇上的風景,看似某個酒店的房間,亦似是一座浮於海上的包廂,金門大橋一直都在,青藍天空連結了虛構而又熟悉的空間; 當中人們帶著不同的特徵,一點點存在的證明,又若即若離,在搶奪著作家的注視;然而當一切被人形觀察者注視著,被注視的人形看似剝開了表皮,被看穿了情緒和步調,於是瞬間的翻臉化成一組組字串紀錄,撿拾拼合,然後又被重新組成獨一無二的風景。

about the artist /

Sing Jantzen Tse received his Master of Fine Art at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Sing’s artworks focus on the topics of language and conversation, sound and visuals of daily objects and city landscapes. Delighted in reconstructing scenes using diverse materials to document and re-present various pure experiences, his artworks explore the inextricable and entangled relationships between people, time, the urban environment, and objects of daily life. Tse’s creative practice is primarily led by sound and video installations, as well as sound performances. Tse is active in varied kinds of music and multimedia theatre performances. He also engages in Artistic education. The latest solo exhibition is “Mass Transit Railway” (2024). Tse was supported by soundpocket’s Artist Support Programme 2011–12.
