Street Language – Installation Documentation
This is an installation work consisting of “space”, “hearing”, “seeing”, “touching”, that derived from public streets of the local area in Hong Kong. I tried to simulate and reproduce the mutual influence and the unalienable relationship between us towards the ordinary street posts and the fading telephone booths.
The artwork consists of three parts, an interactive telephone booth, a video projection, and 10 channels audio attached to metallic street posts.
Street posts from everywhere are a function of blocking dangers from the road to the pedestrian street, that we neglect the metal-made waist-high columns; The telephone booths mostly survive for a resting box with Wi-Fi, that they guard us from any moment we stop by. They are about a pause of our city, an evidence of us being exposed in the public street, also, they have gently recorded a few decades of significant changes of Hong Kong. In visual, a ceaseless loop of position measures the rhythm and order of a city; in auditory, sounds are reflected and diffracted from every street post to our ears, with a dedicated soundscape; In tactile, they provide a place to rely on, recording someone’s memory.
We are losing the experience of walking in the street, as we are entering the digital and virtual era, as space is being even extravagant. We are designed to finish every task in-door in the future world, so that wandering in public streets would be a history. So I am trying to reproduce an outdoor scene in a room, in order to remind us of our habit, experience of wandering, waiting in the landscape we own together.
Do you miss the feeling of wandering freely through narrow streets and alleys?
