Videotage has been invited to participate in the 2025 edition of the ARKIPEL Jakarta International Documentary & Experimental Film Festival, organised by Forum Lenteng, which takes place this September. As part of the programme, Videotage will present two special screenings under the theme “Pieces of Piecing”, featuring 18 works by 16 artists.

The theme of this year’s ARKIPEL Festival is Years of Living Dangerously. Amid rising tensions between nations, the festival explores how artists use moving images to respond to both the present and the past. Videotage’s curatorial project, Pieces of Piecing, comprises two thematic screenings: Alternative Animation and Historical Connections.

The theme draws on two key ideas. “Pieces” refers to scattered, lost, or buried fragments– whether they come from shards of personal memory or remnants of collective memory. “Piecing” highlights the act and practices of assembling, reorganising, and reconstructing these fragments. Pieces of Piecing not only showcases the fragments embedded in the works, but also draws attention to the collage process -how artists, through unofficial and decentralised means, excavate forgotten memories and reconnect them into meaningful constellations.

Collage forms the foundation of animation. Alternative Animation explores diverse animation languages and collage techniques ranging from 16mm film, GIFs, moving photographs, machinima to AI-generated sequences. This programme celebrates the medium’s variety, piecing together new narrative threads and unlocking new imaginative perspectives.

Historical Connections adopts a historical lens to explore identity, family memory, collective wounds, and the lingering spectre of conflicts, offering a close examination of the intertwined strands of Asia’s past. Within seemingly objective historical records, artists search for alternative fragments as points of entry, reinterpreting history in different geopolitical contexts.

Four local artists—Lam Wing Sze, Kaho Albert Yu, Law Yuk Mui and Wong Winsome Dumalagan—will travel to Indonesia to attend the screening events and post-screening discussions. During the festival, Yu will lead a 3D animation workshop, while Wong will delve into Forum Lenteng’s video archives, tracing the development of the local video scene and fostering connections between the video art communities of Hong Kong and Indonesia.

本年度ARKIPEL電影節取題《Years of Living Dangerously》，在日益緊張的國際局勢中，創作人何用影像回應當下及歷史。錄影太奇策劃《Pieces of Piecing》單元，推出《另類動畫》與《亞洲連結》兩個放映專題。

Pieces 指向那些零散、遺落或被掩埋的片段——或源於個人記憶的碎屑，或藏於集體回憶的斷片；Piecing 則是強調拼湊、重組、重構這些碎片的行動和手法。 「Pieces of Piecing」不僅看見作品呈現的「片段」，也同時被提醒「拼貼」這一過程：藝術家如何以非官方、去中心化的方式，從斷裂或遺忘中挖掘種種記憶，並將它們重新連結。

「拼貼」是動畫的核心。《另類動畫》聚焦探索多元的「動」畫語言及「拼貼」手法：16毫米影像、GIF、動態相片、機造電影、AI生成動畫⋯⋯，呈現此一媒介的多樣性，拼湊出新的敘事線索與開拓新的想像視角。

《亞洲連結》從歷史脈絡切入，探討身份認同、家族記憶、社會創傷、收至戰爭陰影，深刻剖析亞洲歷史的交織與糾葛。在看似客觀的歷史資料中，藝術家於縫隙間尋找另類的斷片作為入手點，並在不同地緣政治語境下重新詮釋歷史。

四位本地藝術家：林穎詩、余家豪、羅玉梅和黃慧心將前往印尼出席放映活動及映後談。其中，余氏將舉辦3D動畫工作坊；黃氏則深入探索 Forum Lenteng 的影片館藏，梳理當地錄像文化的脈絡，並連結香港與印尼的錄像藝術社群。
