Artist Residency
15/07/2019 - 30/08/2019

A new exchange programme co-organised by Videotage and Centre for Chinese Contemporary Art (CFCCA). Aiming to encourage the cultural exchange between Hong Kong’s and Manchester’s artists and audience, the 6-week residency supports contemporary artists and practitioners working with moving image and/or new media in their research and production of new artworks. The 2019 residency has started with UK-based artist Bahar Noorizadeh and Hong Kong-based artist Andrew Luk as the artist in residence in Hong Kong and Manchester, UK respectively from July to August 2019.

HK Artist-in-residence@CFCCA – Andrew Luk

Andrew Luk is a Hong Kong artist whose material-based practice of creating installations, sculptures, and images investigates how civilization regards itself in relation to nature by way of examining human projects as well as studying naturally occurring systems of entropy, anti-entropy, and preservation. Time, in regards to history, memory, and experience, is utilized as a medium; selectively enhancing and detracting value by reconfiguring both fictional and factual material histories and composing arrangements that mitigate the difference between the man-made and the naturally occurring. The aim is to draw connections between entities and discover new narratives.

Andrew Luk studied a dual degree in Fine Art and European History at the New England School of Art & Design and at Suffolk University in Boston. Since then he has exhibited in The United States, Hong Kong, and Korea. In 2014 he was the recipient of the HKADC Emerging Artist Grant and in 2015 he had a solo exhibition, No Fixed Abode, at Videotage. In addition to co-organizing several artist run events and exhibitions, he recently he has exhibited as part of a group show, The Imaginary Order, at Gallery Exit, and received a HKADC project grant for a year long collaborative digital preservation and gaming project, “Autosave: Smuggler’s Ridge & The Shing Mun Redoubt”.

UK Artist-in-residence@Videotage – Bahar Noorizadeh

Bahar Noorizadeh is an artist, writer and filmmaker. She works on the reformulation of hegemonic time narratives as they collapse in the face of speculation: philosophical, financial, legal, futural, etc. Her work has appeared in the Tate Modern Artists’ Cinema Program; Berlinale Forum Expanded; Biennale of Moving Images, Geneva; Toronto International Film Festival; Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art; Beirut Art Center, and Mercer Union, Toronto; among others. Noorizadeh is a founding member of BLOCC (Building Leverage over Creative Capitalism), a research and education platform that proposes pedagogy as strategy, to alter the relationship between Contemporary Art and the planetary phenomena of urban renewal and social cleansing. Her current research examines the intersections of finance, Contemporary Art and emerging technology, building on the notion of “Weird Economies” to precipitate a cross-disciplinary approach to economic futurism and post-financialization imaginaries. She is pursuing this work as a PhD candidate in Art Practice+Theory at Goldsmiths, University of London.
