FUSE :: artist-in-residence:
Morgan Wong

To continue exploring his interest in the conscious use of colors as in his previous works, Hong Kong photography and video artist Morgan Wong developed a new video installation piece — ‘Untitled – Agnosia series I’ — for Videotage’s FUSE:: Residency.

As an experiment of situating abstraction in moving image, the project attempts to alter the usual way we perceive the visual world. The artist deconstructs the tallest skyscraper on Hong Kong Island — IFC TWO — into videos of pure color. Audiences are invited to experience the building in fragmental, abstract form.

‘Untitled – Agnosia series I’ not only reconstructs one of the most iconic buildings in Hong Kong in a minimalist manner, but also touches on the themes of color and light by relating the two through objectification. When the stereotypical image of the city is reconstructed in an abstract form to the extreme, what do we see and how do we perceive what we see, or more accurately, what we can’t see?

Morgan Wong is one of the few Hong Kong artists who researches on video to an extent that is beyond the field of media art. His work bridges traditional art form and new media, sincerely blending video, performance, photography and painting into a poetic type of make-believe as a starting point of his artistic expression.

At the opening reception on 18 June (Sat, 3pm), the artist will share his concept about the piece and the process of realizing such project.

Morgan Wong (b. 1984, Hong Kong) is an artist currently based in Hong Kong.
