Videotage is excited to announce A Book of Trees, the debut solo exhibition by Hong Kong-based artist Peter Nelson from 17 September to 8 October 2021. Featuring the latest works of the artist which includes a series of paintings that combine machine learning and traditional ink painting and a virtual reality short film, the exhibition delves into the past, present and future of the forestry in Hong Kong juxtaposed with the artist’s memories and experiences of growing up with trees in Australia. The exhibition is also an associated program of CITYA 2021, a large-scale international art exchange program between six global cities including Hong Kong, Beijing, Tallinn, Rome, San Francisco and Macau.

Hong Kong is a densely packed concrete jungle, but one pleasantly planted with roadside trees from across the globe. Peter Nelson was always struck by the number of Australian native trees he encountered on the streets and country parks of Hong Kong. Continuing his exploration of landscape and interactive technologies, the artist has envisioned a transformation of the urban forest via machine drawings and VR experience that touches upon topics of art and technology; physical environment and virtual reality; personal and local history. Through a reinterpretation and reinvention of the urban trees interwoven with the cityscape, the exhibition breathes new life into quotidian greenery beyond geographic boundaries.

Under Videotage’s Leave Your Body Residency, Nelson’s sculptural trees are also implanted in the virtual site of Cattle Depot Artist Village where Videotage is located on Minecraft, engaging poetic and site-specific interaction with the historic red-brick buildings built in the British colonial era.

錄映太奇榮幸宣佈藝術家彼得倪森（Peter Nelson）於香港的首次個展 ——「A Book of Trees」，於2021年9月17日至10月8日在錄映太奇舉行，呈獻藝術家的一系列全新作品。是次作品以繪畫為主，結合機器學習與傳統水墨，以及虛擬短片。展覽並置多重時空，串連藝術家在澳洲成長時圍繞樹木的回憶和經歷，並探索香港城市森林之過去、現在與未來。是次展覽為國際藝術交流計劃CITYA 2021的聯辦節目之一，計劃集結了六個全球城市的藝術家、策展人、藝術文化機構，包括來自香港、北京、塔林、羅馬、三藩市和澳門。

香港是全世界最密集的石屎森林之一，街上卻同時種滿了怡人的樹木。置身於香港的市區街道和郊野公園中，彼得倪森驚喜地發現了不少熟悉的澳洲本土樹木。藝術家將延續其對景觀和互動科技的持續探索，透過機器繪畫和虛擬實境體驗，帶領觀眾進入他對市區森林進行轉化的想像空間，表達有關科技與藝術、自然環境與虛擬現實、個人與地方歷史等命題。 是次展覽重新演繹及建構由樹交織而成的獨有城市景觀，跨越地域界限，為人們習以為常的鬱蔥林木注入新的面貌。

展覽將延伸至錄映太奇的「神遊虛擬駐場計劃」，把倪森製造的樹型雕塑移植到錄映太奇座落在Minecraft世界的虛擬牛棚藝術村，與這英治時期建成的紅磚歷史建築群相映相襯，打造一場富有詩意的場域特定互動旅程。
