Exhibition (as artist in residence program*)
18/06/2025 - 20/07/2025

Videotage is pleased to present Story Machines, Case Mods and Ghost Horses by Netherlands-based artist Janne Schimmel, with the support of Stimuleringfonds. Celebrating the conclusion of his 10-week residency, the exhibition features his gaming sculptures, integrated with the modified devices collected in the city and his collaborative creations with local game enthusiasts and artists’ collective.

Known for his practice of dismantling and reassembling video game devices, Schimmel interrogates their digital and physical composition, exploring the hidden infrastructures that shape how technology is imagined, owned, and experienced.

Drawing inspiration from the richness of the Cantonese language, Schimmel’s observations – rooted in his foreign identity (gwáilóu), his speculative storytelling (gwáimá), and his playful interventions and modifications (jíng gwái jíng má) – are woven together around the diverse ideas of ‘ghosts’. Beyond fictional hauntings, the concept widens to the ghosts of memory, mischief and myth, leading us to uncover the spectral residues embedded in our everyday interfaces and extending the reimagining of the devices’ logics. In this séance for technological afterlives, audiences are not simply engaged as users but as modders, storytellers and hanutologists of technologies.
