Net Art: Data Hacking, Coding and Critical Thinking
Speaker: Ms Winnie Soon

Winnie Soon is an artist-researcher and interested in the areas of network art and computational culture. Her previous collaborative work, ‘Jsut Code’, a networked writing machine, was a winner of a silver award for interactive art at Incubator for Film & Visual Media in Asia (IFVA) in Hong Kong (2012) and has been shown at Writing Machines Collectives (2010, Hong Kong), IFVA awards (2012, Hong Kong), Future Everything (2012, Machester, UK).

Winnie’s artwork has also exhibited internationally and she is currently a PhD Fellow at Aarhus University (Denmark).

Art Intervention in Social Activism

陳錦成分別在2004年及2006年於澳洲皇家墨爾本理工大學和香港藝術中心藝術學院合辦學士純藝術(繪畫)課程和該學院合辦的藝術碩士課程畢業。陳錦成從事平面設計工作,混合媒介雕塑藝術工作者。陳氏喜歡使用不同的物料,探索雕塑的可能性。他利用可變的物料,組成不穩定的結構,呈現作品自身的變化,從而思考自我的存在、身體的延伸和外在客觀世界的存有問題。

Sangwoodgoon was founded in the Anti-High Speed Rail Movement and Tsoi Yuen Village Movement in 2009. In 2012, Sangwoodgoon tries cultivating rice for the second time. This film records the rice planting process in spring and Dragon Boat Festival. Not only did the director experience the unpredictable nature of weather, questions for his companion are raised at the same time: How is the life as a farmer in Hong Kong when there is shortage of land and labour? Apart from documenting the non-traditional rice cultivating techniques, the film also wants to discuss about the relationship between farmer and nature, and the changing state of mind of protestors all the way through. The director will film a feature regarding Hong Kong farmer in 2013, this work has documented his learning in farming in 2012.

“Room 237″ is a 2012 American documentary film directed by Rodney Ascher about perceived meanings in Stanley Kubrick’s film The Shining. The film includes footage from The Shining, and other Kubrick films, along with discussions by a number of Kubrick enthusiasts. The film has nine segments, each segment focusing on different elements within the film which “may reveal hidden clues and hint at a bigger thematic oeuvre.

Ms. Kong King-chu of the Step Forward Multi Media Co Ltd. said, ‘Readers of local literature should never miss the works of Xixi.’ She planned to shoot a documentary about Xixi a few years ago. Ms. Kong said, ‘It’s a documentary without a scene showing Xixi. But it’s all about her.’

The Typology of Art and Cultural Institutions in China
Speaker: Dr. Isaac Leung

Isaac Leung is a practicing artist, curator and researcher in art and culture. Leung received an Honorary Fellowship of a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the New Media Art Department of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, the University of the Arts London. His passion in exploring issues in contemporary art began during his time in college. During 1998-2008, his artworks were exhibited in over 30 venues across the globe. His works were featured on National Public Radio (USA), and in Agence France-Presse (France), Chicago Tribune (USA), NY Arts Magazine (USA), Chicago Readers (USA) and the South China Morning Post (Hong Kong). Leung has recently finished his doctorate research at the School of Creative Media, the City University of Hong Kong, specializing in the contemporary Chinese art market.

Orient Top Town is the name of a luxurious development in Southern Shanghai. More than 100 artists live and work there for free. This is art and property in partnership , something that recently Hong Kong property developers have picked up on : they are using visual artists to sell new apartments. If you think art should not be connected to property, think again.

Big Data and Digital Poetry (performance and lecture)
Speaker: Dr. Jhave David Johnston (In English with some Cantonese translations by Mak Ying Tung 麥影彤)

Bio: Jhave uses algorithms as aesthetic tools; and believes that moist matter is quasi-sentient. His work reconciles computation, emotion, concepts, and the ancient idea of artist as conduit. Current project: poetry generation using machine learning.

Iron Sky is a 2012 Finnish-Australian-German comic science fiction action film directed by Timo Vuorensola and written by Johanna Sinisalo and Michael Kalesniko. It tells the story of a group of Nazi Germans who, having been defeated in 1945, fled to the Moon where they built a space fleet to return in 2018 and conquer Earth.
