Videotage × Forum Lenteng: Scales of Passage (Bangkok)Videotage × Forum Lenteng:
In summer and winter, strong monsoon gusts sweep across the Asia-Pacific, which come as soon as they dissipate.
From Nanyang during the colonial times to ‘Southeast Asia’ following post-war decolonisation, the lived experiences on the islands in between the Indian and Pacific Oceans are ultimately simplified and flattened under generalised names, regardless of their forms of governance.
As the wind turns, the people are driven by various forces to leave their homelands in pursuit of the uncertain promise of a better life. When things have gone awry occasionally, scenes of troubles re-occur in front of one’s eyes, the brief stay in one place may also be prolonged. Our vision becomes blurred when identities old and new linger, but our body may not need a clear picture to make an impression. As journeys unfold, a song, a mythical totem, a ceremony often contain histories and memories much heavier than themselves.
As shapeless as it seems, the monsoon is critical for the Southeast Asian countries’ trading relations, monitoring the migration pattern of the diasporic communities, and forming a rhythmic pulse in people’s daily lives. By retracing existing routes, we seek to sense the historical undercurrents beneath visible landmarks, and to bring the climate into view as we consider the landscape.
Following its presentation at TIDF in May and the ARKIPEL Festival in September, Scales of Passage, the touring screening series co-curated by Videotage and Forum Lenteng, will land in Bangkok, Thailand this November. Beginning with the shared symbolism of guardian spirits, the programme treats migrants’ and their descendants’ experiences as the ‘scales’ of these metaphoric beings, tracing fragments that shape diasporic identities.
Videotage will also present the screening programme Can you see the Monsoon?, echoing the historical reflection in Scales of Passage. By turning the lens towards the land and climate, the programme broadens the scope of the showcase from Southeast Asia to the Asia-Pacific.
Based on their sensory experience, fragments of memories, or a non-human perspective, artists featured in the programme inquire into the origins of wind and water, exploring how these forces shape one’s desire and transform the landscape.
Programme Partner: ซนี — cine | zine | scene
ซนี — cine | zine | scene is an ambitious new alternative space launched in Fall 2026. Scales of Passage and Can you see the Monsoon? are part of the space’s inaugural happenings.
Drawing on the founders’ extensive media experience, this alternative space is designed as a platform for alternative and non main-stream groups to showcase, exhibit, exchange ideas and engage in discussions on the edge of art and politics, focusing on creative practices not only in Thailand but across the wider region.
Located in Bang Phlat, a central area of Bangkok, the alternative space comprises a three-storey building, featuring a gallery, a community kitchen, guest room and various event spaces, intended to accommodate activities of diverse scales.
