October Contemporary 2008- Attr Action

Exhibition
04/10/2008 - 04/11/2008

October Contemporary is an annual month-long platform inaugurated in 2007 to promote contemporary visual art and artists in Hong Kong. This October, eight of the city’s leading art spaces and institutions will jointly present a series of exhibitions, talks, workshops, screenings and performances under one umbrella theme, offering diverse perspectives within a clearly defined curatorial framework.

The theme “Attr/Action” has been chosen for October Contemporary 2008. Stemming from discussions about the nature of large-scale public events such as the Venice Biennale and the Olympics, the notion of “Attr/Action” alludes, among other things, to the phenomenon of cultural or tourist attractions, and the way in which these are used to market the images of cities and nations.

October Contemporary 2008 seeks to explore the allure of such attractions without losing sight of the social and political processes that inform their public reception. The apparently innocuous entertainment value of the attraction will be subjected to an active analysis, critique and re-invention, in some cases using the same potent and widespread appeal to engage with audiences on various issues.
