D-normal/V-essay: Videotage Edition - Open Call《平地數碼:錄映太奇特刊》公開徵集

To articulate our daily experiences and to share knowledge with the video essay
D-Normal / V-Essay is a video zine initiated by Floating Projects Collective in 2021, focusing on video essays from various regions. Each issue is disseminated online and highlights outstanding submissions from the open call video-essay competition. With 6 published issues, this initiative has featured nearly 100 video creators and over 100 video works.
In this round, Videotage will organise and edit the seventh issue of the video zine. With the intensifying presence of generative technologies in the AI milieu, we hope to gather video creators from around the world through an open call. Submitted works will contribute to broadening the horizons of the established video essay to incorporate new modes of imaging technologies. How would a broader range of technology shape our personal articulation of how we lived and how to live?
As a keen observer of media arts, Videotage seeks to move beyond the usual curatorial framework. We not only emphasise “what kind of video articles we want to encourage,” but also further ask “what video essays could be,” and “in what ways is the video essay is a timely intervention to invoke new agencies and affordances in our milieu.” Our open call, therefore, is to invite collaborators (judges and participants) to re-imagine the video essay to push its boundaries. Our “collaborators” are not limited to artists, but also include a wider range of video creators. Anyone who expresses with moving image and sound are welcome to participate.
To include the diverse range of video creators, the open call for D-Normal / V-Essay will categories submissions based on content direction. Each submission can respond to up to three categories, which will serve as reference rather than for criteria for selection. The content of the video zine will be tailored around the outstanding video essays received and can be referenced in previous editions. All shortlisted works will be added to D-Normal / V-Essay’s website, as well as the Videotage Media Art Collection for learning and resource purposes. In addition to online publication, we will showcase the awarded entries at Videotage for a designated period. By promoting these works through various channels, we hope to engage a broader audience in the video communication-driven community, advancing the vocabularies that we can use in our digital society.

《平地數碼》錄像雜誌於2020年由「據點。句點」策劃,專注於全球的錄像文章創作。雜誌在線上平台發表,並選輯公開徵集比賽的優秀作品。截至2023年,雜誌已出版六期,收錄近百位創作者及約百條錄像文章作品。
今年,錄映太奇將主理《平地數碼》第七期雜誌。在影像生成技術日益成熟的背景下,我們希望以公開徵集的形式連結全球的錄像創作者,探索他們如何運用不同技術,以單頻錄像創作錄像文章,並探討多樣的技術資源如何塑造我們對生活感知及追求的表達。
同時,作為長期關注媒體藝術的組織,錄映太奇希望這次策劃能超越平日的策展論述框架,不單強調「我們想鼓勵怎樣的錄像文章?」,更進一步問「錄像文章還有甚麼可能性?」,「此時此刻可以怎樣發揮錄像文章應時的能動性?」以此為驅動力,邀請各類協作者(包括評審及參加者)共同想像、探索和討論。在這裡,協作者的定義不僅限於藝術家,也涵蓋更廣泛的錄像創作者。只要以錄像文章表達其意念的人,皆可參與。
為了廣納不同的錄像創作者,《平地數碼》的公開徵集將根據內容方向劃分類別。每個參賽作品可以選擇不多於三個類別,這些類別僅作參考,並不影響競賽結果。雜誌的內容將根據所收錄的優秀作品來擬定,詳情可參考以往的期數。入圍作品將收錄於《平地數碼》網站,以及錄映太奇媒體藝術庫藏,作研究及教育用途。除在網上平台發佈之外,得獎作品亦將於錄映太奇舉辦實體放映活動。我們希望透過多元的推廣形式,吸引更多人加入這個以錄像溝通的社群,攜手革新媒體社會中的交流語言。
