Korean artist Yoon Chung Han has been seeking new ways to create projects by
mixing diverse territories such as artificial life, urban habitat, cosmology, biological
organisms, and phonology. She believes that the new natural way of life progression
is based on the merging between biology and art.
In the exhibition 'ONE', emerging artist Yoon Chung Han selected 4 works that are
closely related to biological lives, nature and environment. These works created by
herself and Erick Oh, the award-winning animation artist based on Los Angeles, have
a strong focus on sound, en element that has been interested Yoon for years. In terms
of style, Yoon's works are very much inspired by the simplicity in the works of masters
Nam June Paik, Toshio Iwai, John Cage, Oskar Fischinger, John Whitney, and
John Maeda.
The artist’s work has always been about exploring new ways of creating sound-based
physical interaction design, interactive installations, and sound visualizations. She
notices sound is everywhere, invisible, intuitive and experiential. These characteristics
of sound lead her to keep creating diverse ways of expressing sounds based on her
intuitive thoughts and observation of human's behaviors.
The meaning of the exhibition title “One” is to get all diverse territories together and
create an unexpected territory in the world – the ONE and the only ONE territory.
While our world will be consistently updated by circulating accumulation of new artistic
creatures, this exhibition points out the merging between art and biology in the artist's
unique point of view and the sophisticated digital creatures that hence come about.
Work Description >>
One - A Biological Art Installation
By Yoon Chung Han, Erick Oh, Gautam Rangan

'One' tries to immerse the viewer in fantasy through animation. The audience is presented with a small dish that contains a little spilled ink - what happens inside and around this drop of pigment?
If you look close enough, you can see that the ink is listening! The viewer plays the role of a god temporarily: tapping, prodding, covering, blowing on and speaking to the ink induces complex and intricate responses. The microcosm that evolves from doodling both reflects and subverts the natural systems in which we live.
Phonophobia - Sound installation + Sound Visualization
By Yoon Chung Han

Humans have their own fears in their minds. In particular, the fear of “Sound” strongly affects human’s sensory organs since humans tend to imagine or over-think everything when they hear invisible sound.
The fear of sounds is called “Phonophobia”, which can be a serious disease or unique urban symptom to people who live in urban areas. This project focuses on the human’s fear of urban noises and sounds, and suggests an amplifying object.
Jellyfish - An Interactive Musical Instrument
By Yoon Chung Han

'Jellyfish' is an interactive sound installation. It’s an extended version of the artists’ previous work “Sound Marbles”, which creates the composition of sounds by simple interaction. Jellyfish uses the simplest way of interaction – touching -- with objects to create sounds, and the way of creating sounds was inspired by musical instruments.
This work was selected by Takeaway Festival (London) in 2009.
Symphony – Animated film
By Erick Oh

‘Symphony’ is an abstract animation set to Vivaldi's "Summer", a concerto from The Four Seasons. The film portrays a sentient creature trying to escape from a reality of being swept away and assimilated into the mainstream, regardless of its own will. The topic of this abstractedly crafted animation applies to anything that struggles to be free. It can be a phenomenon occurring deep within the body and soul, or an individual confronting the standardized masses. In order to create a whole new abstract world that conveys lots of matters, the director borrowed the image of the organic form from the interior of the human body, especially the strong similarity between the journey of a sperm to bore a new life and the dreadful virus causing corruption and death gave him a huge inspiration to visualize his thought on human life.

One -
Yoon Chung Han, Erick Oh, Gautam Rangan

Phonophobia -
Yoon Chung Han

Jellyfish -
Yoon Chung Han

Symphony -
Erick Oh
