Result Announcement

Videotage is pleased to announce the two selected residents of fuse:: 2009/10 --
João Vasco Paiva (HK/Portugal) & Gabriela Jurkovic (Prague).

João Vasco Paiva is a Hongkong-based Portuguese artist, who will further develop his sculptural sound installation Chirps through an experiment with a living Mynah bird during his Residency. The installation will be shown in an exhibition opening on 9 Jan 2010 (Sat) at Videotage.

João Vasco Paiva is a Portuguese artist currently living in Hong Kong. His work is based on the exploration of sound and visuals produced through the isolation of physical patterns. He uses digital and analog systems to depict scores in everyday life situations and rearrange them as sound and visual compositions. He presents his work as live performances, single channel videos and audio visual installations. He graduated from a Fine Arts Degree in Porto Art School. (E.S.A.P.) In 2006 he was awarded with a 2 years scholarship from Fundaçao Oriente, a Portuguese Foundation that supports young artists in Asia. He obtained a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Media in the School of Creative Media, City University of Hong Kong, where he currently teaches.

Gabriela Jurkovic is a curator from Prague. During her 5-month residency, Gabriela will introduce the current Czech and Slovak New Media and video projects to the Hong Kong audience, and at the same time research on Hong Kong video art and bring some of the works back to her country for an exchange program.

Gabriela Jurkovicova graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague (mgA) in June 2009 with a
focus on new media, video and conceptual art. In 2008, she received a scholarship at the Erasmus
University of London MDX in Landsdown Center for Electronic Arts, Design for Interactive Media and
at the same time in the field of Fine Art. Studying at the Academy crowned dissertation entitled “intimacy”,
video linking reconstruction smell beloved man with intimate video format 2x3 cm, on Flakon
perfume. (which was exposed at the exhibition in the National Gallery in Prague.)
Gabriela is particularly interested in video and interactive installations, with excursions to other
areas of human activities and research. In 2007, she co-founded OUTPUT.cz organization for the promotion
of young artists, focusing on digital art and video, with its own exhibition space. The Gallery
was opened in July 2008 and has presented the work of more than fifty artists and received a grant
from the City of Prague.

OPEN CALL for proposals

Videotage is a non-profit interdisciplinary artist collective with a focus on the development of video and new media art in Hong Kong. One of Asia’s first media art organizations, Videotage was founded in 1986 and is funded by the government to cultivate interest and nurture artists in this swiftly evolving field of art.

Videotage is now accepting applications for 2009-2011 residencies. We would like to invite all local and international artists/curators/researchers/engineer/bloggers/environmentalist/activists interested in the field of media art to submit proposals for a creative and edgy project to be completed between 2009-2011 The residency is a one- to six-month period in which residents focus in, but not limited to, the following areas:

1. Research projects
2. Ongoing curatorial programming
3. Video art archive development
4. Fundraising development / Non-profit management

With the opportunity to join our broad network of artists, curators, academics and researchers working in the field of media art and to use our resources, residents are expected to develop a project to be completed, not necessarily within the period of residency, and lead to possible outcomes such as seminar, public discussion, performance and exhibition. Residents are also encouraged to participate in public events including workshops, demonstrations of research-in-progress and online releases.

What we can provide:
- Media resources (video art archive, library)
- Network (artists, curators, academics, art institutions, universities, galleries, festivals etc.)
- Production resources (equipment i.e. projectors, cameras, TVs, computers etc.)
- Venue/space for exhibition and art making
- A stipend of up to HK$20,000 to support project execution
(depending on the scale of the project, amount will be confirmed upon acceptance of proposals)

International residents are responsible for their travel costs, accommodation, living and moving expenses. Videotage staff will assist as much as possible with visa arrangements and locating cheaper accommodation in Hong Kong.

Residents can have a work desk in our office and make use of our gallery space, of which you can find the floor plan here. Residents have access to the space during office hours and other times upon request. Videotage will provide project-specific technical assistance to residents where possible though residents are expected to possess the skills necessary to execute their projects.

Collaborative projects are eligible for the residency program. Please provide resumes and work samples for each collaborator, and describe the contribution of each collaborator in the application form. Collaborators share the residency stipend.
